Sketchers Party Summer 2024

Well, what a successful summer’s sketching we’ve had. Thirteen trips out to eleven different venues. Out of the eleven venues, only three did not serve Beavertown Neck Oil! However, I digress.

The number of sketchers varied from 12 at the first outing to the Old Green Dragon (and seriously, she’s not that bad!) in Oxton, to 5 at the final at the Horse & Groom, Linby. The only difficult venue was the Woodlark in Lambley, where there was absolutely NO parking spaces, so we were forced to trot down to the Robin Hood at the bottom of the road.

Each place has its good points, some better than others, and, as shown in the resultant sketches, something for everyone. It was good to see the hardcore regulars who, like me, attended all, or nearly all, the venues, but it would be interesting to have the views of those who started off well and then dropped out. Could we have tried to make it better? Then again, it could be due to circumstances; I remember many times in the past when it was inconvenient for me to make Wednesday evenings

Some of the venues we visited were interested in what we were doing, and who we were, and could we let them know when exhibitions were on.

I was personally accosted more than once when I was precariously perched on my little seat, trying to get as much detail in my sketch as I could: What are you doing? Are you local? I do a bit of painting.

Oh, that looks nice! Are you with an art club? (no, we use paintbrushes) Etc., etc. We predominantly sketched within the NG14 postcode area but dabbled our feet in NG15.

Maybe next year, we could do them in reverse order, or, if anyone has any suggestions, go in a different direction.
